Hi All, In a few months, my team will be using OpenSpace for the first time on a new ground-up mixed use project. I will be managing and helping set up the initial process for our team to use OpenSpace. Our project engineer and superintendents will likely be doing most of the captures. Any tips or suggestions for a successful initial setup that would provide the most value through the duration of the project? Any lessons learned on what you wish you had implemented from day one? Any feedback or tips are appreciated!
Obviously there are positions in construction that require bodies physically at a jobsite. But as construction engineers that lean more heavily on technology has anyone fully settled on their work from home approach? Are you full WFH, already back at the office or do you have a hybrid model? Is anyone seeing massive productivity gains losses in any of said categories?
The OpenSpace Product Team is very interested in the topics being discussed in this product ideas thread. We especially would like to learn more about what you would like to see in the product related to locations, rooms, regions and zones. We will be hosting a round table in February on this topic, and we want to know which date and time works best for you! Please fill out the poll below so that we can schedule this event when the most people are available. If you have another preferred date or time that is not listed in the options, you can leave it in the comments.

Happy New Year everyone! 2021 saw a huge jump in ConTech advancements, partially due to everything that is going on, in spaces like AR/VR, drones/robots, and wearables. (Please let me know if I’m missing any). As we enter 2022, curious to hear your thoughts on what you see the construction trends for the new year being?
Will anyone be at the MEP Innovation Conference in Tampa this January 24th-26th? OpenSpace will have an exhibit. Curious to know which conferences our customers are going to attend, whether it be in person or virtual. Please post any good ones below!
Has anyone taken a capture and gotten a photo of something they weren’t expecting? This one is hard to see, but I took a videowalk and came across a deer. I wouldn’t have found him in my photos by looking at it, but he snuck up on me and scared the dangdoodle out of me (my apologies to all hunters that are shaking their heads right now): Anyone else have some good shots or funny stories?
Hi folks! I am sure we all have different stories and paths that have led us to where we are now in our careers within construction. I’m curious - what led you to working in the construction industry? I’ll start! I studied business but always had a love for construction/real estate development. My first gig out of college was in facilities mgmt which I knew I did not want to be in long term. But, it was a good stepping stone and led me to working as an APM in ground up construction where I got amazing experience and learned A TON. I always had my eye on construction tech firms/start ups (like OpenSpace) and finally made the jump. It’s been a blast and cannot wait to see where con tech goes from here.
Did anyone have to make a schedule to walk for their project? This helped provide some accountability to make sure the team was all doing their part in getting captures/data.Here’s a link to one I made if someone needs a starting point to make something for themselves.OpenSpace Schedule(black - the floor not existing yet, white - available capture window time frame, orange - scheduled finish)Who else has a schedule or some other supplemental tracking system they used for their projects to share to help out folks that may need some traction?
A few months ago, Clancy & Theys led an OpenSpace webinar centered around optimizing OpenSpace. I highly encourage those of you who would like to create more efficiencies to listen to the recording, but I have posted the takeaways below. Have a ‘Getting Started’ Guide Provided Equipment Project Creation, Who to Contact and Where to Go Support Additional Resources and Recommendations Capturing: Walking Paths: How are you planning out the walk? Consistency with Naming Conventions: Progress and Milestone Walks Date in Name of Capture Viewing Captures: Sheets View Calendar View Swift Navigation through Field Notes Use Field Notes to navigate through the project Coordination meeting: Drop a Field Note and tag it BIM Coordination (“Hey, we are installing sleeves…” and notify people as a way to track it Have PMs add Field Notes in a Sub/Internal meeting - A way to log views and jump around the project Room location Sharing Captures: Shared Folder Turnove
OpenSpace Field Notes are a great communication and documentation tool and are used in many different ways. What are some creative ways that your teams have used Field Notes? As Field Note features have evolved, it’s been amazing to see how our users have come up with different ways to use this tool. I've seen Field Notes used for QC/Safety Issue documentation, equipment tracking, and even O&M Manual handoff to the client!
During a conversation with Pauline Schoech @pschoech, one of our newest Pathfinders, she talked about how OpenSpace was a helpful alternative to drones. Pauline’s previous process during slab-on grades was to fly a drone around the specific area, but as they started going up, tower cranes got put on site and construction got messier. One of the biggest obstacles was weather. Being on the coast of Florida, strong wind and drones don’t always play nice. Unless there was a torrential downpour, OpenSpace became the most reliable option for Pauline and team. Taking a 5 to 10 minute OpenSpace capture allowed them to get their pre-pour inspections done without having to worry about the other external conditions and factors. Anyone else in Florida or in an area where the weather is dicey? Is OpenSpace solving this issue, or are you still using drones?
Has anyone utilized the “playback” function on the web version during meetings? I know it usually takes a lot of bandwidth to run it while on a virtual meeting but seems the 0.5 speed is the most effective with the options provided. I wouldn't mind seeing a 0.25 speed option. Looking to see if anyone else uses this and how you apply it or showcase it with the teams.
I am curious to know how everyone is using openspace with sub-trades?I have started to use openspace for discussions with subtrades during the tendering phase of tenant Improvement projects. Sometimes it is easier to perform a MS TEAMS meeting with the subtrade and review the site conditions using openspace rather than meeting on-site. We no longer need to meet on-site for a 10-15 minute meeting! The subtrades appreciate this solution as they save time not having to travel to the site.I’m just curious, how are all of you using openspace to your advantage in working with subtrades?
used open space for something a little different today. Building a 35 story high rise currently we are framed with drywall top out done up to level 09 with layout done up to L19. MEP subs having layout of penetrations through walls on time is almost always an issue with “go backs” by framer/drywaller trade usually associated with missing layout. Sequencing has the MEP trades laying out their penetrations 1 floor ahead of framing. This creates opportunity for an openspace capture right before framing begins that accounts for layout having been present at the time framing begins and eliminates argument of weather layout was or was not there. This helps greatly with identifying cost responsible party of said “go back” work.Held camera face down towards floor about waist height with a decent light and walked the entire floor, every wall line and defiantly captured what was or was not there at the time.PRICELESS!

Hey Everyone,As the Black Friday Shopping is coming up, I thought I would share what I use in addition to my Insta 360 One X camera. I bet these products will be at a great discount in the next two weeks. In addition to the Insta360 One X camera, I use the NXT technologies rechargeable battery in the link below. Its awesome because the LED tells you how much battery you have and it can last about a day. (12hours)NXT Technologies 24385183 5000 mAh 1 USB Port PowerBank, Black (Amazon Hyperlink) $13.00I also use a micro USB that came separately. I use a small one from an old wireless speaker of mine in the picture. For micro-usb cables to charge the NXT Technologies portable battery. I recommend using theamazon basics micro-usb (Amazon Hyperlink Approx. $10.00)As for my camera holster I carry my camera and charger in I use the….Amazon Basics Holster Camera Case (Amazon Hyperlink) $14.00As you can see, the OpenSpace camera cable can work with my rechargeable battery. Captures can be recorded
Can someone tell me if there is a way to set more capture points? meaning as i walk and capture “LAYOUT” the day my framing duration starts on a floor and i want to capture every inch of layoput done by MEP trades as evedience as to weather they did or did not have it done the day my duration begins i am not getting very good results. camera is set to the most pictures per second i can and i pause as i walk holding position over important locations to note and i wont get a picture sometimes. it will be between frames or openspace process a vantage point that isnt what im looking for. openspace always captures the overall “BIG PICTURE” but for “LAYOUT” captures this isnt work very well. is there a way to have more capture points on the finished stiched together version i get as a finish product? because as is a user has big gaps in capture.

Any opinions on the best 360 camera when using OpenSpace?I’ve really liked the Insta360 One X, but haven’t upgraded nor tried the X2 yet… and really haven’t used another camera for captures, so I just wanted to see if anyone has been able to test drive a couple and made a decision based on dating around rather than an arranged marriage.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO JOINED US FOR WAYPOINT YESTERDAY!!!We had a blast meeting all of you. For those who missed it, we had a raffle for an iPad Pro and everyone who was registered in the OpenSpace Community by the end of the event was entered into the raffle.
